Here I Stand: Courage and Conviction in the Reformation

What does it mean to stand firmly for what we believe while remaining humble enough to be changed?

Throughout the Reformation, the tension between conscience and institutional authority played a significant role. Martin Luther’s famous “Here I stand” moment and John Knox’s confrontation with a Scottish queen both demonstrate remarkable courage and conviction. Yet, as history reminds us, even courageous leaders and their legacies are not beyond correction. Luther’s antisemitism and Knox’s views on women challenge us to wrestle honestly with the limits and consequences of our convictions.

Join us as Matt Heisler explores this question:

How can we be courageous and confident enough to stand for our convictions—and humble enough to be corrected and continually “reformed”?

Perhaps a way forward can be found in another Reformation ideal:

Semper reformanda — “reformed, and always reforming.”

Come for thoughtful conversation, reflection, and an opportunity to consider what it means to live faithfully with both conviction and humility.
